Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles sequelized on Wii

Capcom teased word that it would be making "new game announcements" as part of its Resident Evil 5 launch party in San Francisco on March 12. The information quickly sparked a firestorm of speculation, with comments made by Capcom associate product-marketing manager Matt Dahlgren appearing to indicate that the publisher was planning on announcing a Wii installment in the Resident Evil: Code Veronica universe.

As it would turn out, that speculation was only mostly right. Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu reports today that Capcom is at work on Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles for the Wii. (Scans of the announcement were obtained by Kotaku and translated by GameSpot.) However, instead of pulling its inspiration from Code Veronica, Darkside Chronicles will be a continuation of Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, an on-rails shooter released for the Wii in 2007. Capcom has tasked Bullet Witch studio Cavia with developing The Darkside Chronicles. The game will be set in Raccoon City, last seen in Resident Evil 2, in the year 1998. Players will be tasked with cleansing the city's zombified denizens, who have become infected with the T-virus. As with the original, The Darkside Chronicles will accommodate cooperative play for one or two players. Famitsu did not reveal a release date for the game. Capcom is expected to officially announce the game in the US tomorrow night as part of a series of Resident Evil 5 midnight launch events.
